The 10 Seconds Between Chaos and Your Next Move

By Julia Vaughan · Originally published October 13, 2026

Chaos rarely asks permission. The email lands, the plan falls apart, the call comes in. Then there’s a short gap, usually less than ten seconds, before you react. What you do inside that gap shapes the rest of your day.

Most of us skip it. We snap, we spiral, or we shut down. Not because we’re weak, but because the reaction was already loaded before we got there.

Picture it: you’re about to walk into an important meeting when you learn a key piece fell through. Your chest tightens, your thoughts race, and you can feel the story forming (“this always happens to me”). That’s the moment that matters. The chaos is out of your hands, but the next move isn’t.

Resilience isn’t never being rattled. It’s how fast you notice you’ve been rattled and choose your response instead of letting it choose you. Accountability starts there too: owning your next move, even when you didn’t cause the problem.

Try This

The next time something goes sideways, do three things before you respond:

1. Take one slow breath out, longer than the one in.

2. Name what you’re feeling in one word (“frustrated,” “embarrassed,” “scared”).

3. Ask, “What’s the one thing in my control right now?”

That’s it. Ten seconds, three steps. Do it on something small this week so it’s there when the big thing hits.

Chaos happens. What you do next matters.

Your turn: What’s the situation where you most wish you’d paused? Reply and tell me. I read every one.
